The 2012 WA Poetry Festival

August 17-20

WA Poets Inc. organises and runs a four-day Poetry Festival in August 2012 that showcases four local poets, two national poets and one international poet, as well as hosting a wide variety of events for WA poets. This will be the eighth annual WA Poetry Festival organised by WA Poets Inc. As part of the Festival, we will run workshops, poetry readings, talks, slams and poetry contests that will give local poets a scene to explore and challenge their craft by bringing together different poetic expressions, languages and traditions. In 2012, we hope to continue the Poetry Festival’s inclusion in the City of Perth’s Winter Arts Season.

By bringing together local, national, and international poets, we aim to give our local artists professional development opportunities, through networking opportunities, through workshops, and through exposure to artists from outside the WA community. We hope to develop a diverse, inclusive program that will provide opportunities for local poets to engage with and challenge their own craft, and to develop poetry culture in WA. As a result of this, we hope to promote local poets so that they may develop professionally, and engage with a broader public readership.

In the past, the festival has fostered a wider community of poets and poetry lovers through a diverse inclusion of local, national and international guests which have worked together to present readings and events. These have included poets such as Geoff Lemon and Graeme Nunn as well as collaborations with other arts organisations such as dotdotdash, Perth Poetry Club, Cottonmouth, Perth Poetry Club and local writer’s centres.

This year the Festival will run from Monday the 17th of August until Friday the 20th of August. The list of guest poets will be released soon.
