FEATURING Belowsky

Belowsky is a train-wreck waiting to happen – he will hit all your senses, with his brand new, unique one-man show, so enter at your own risk and Take a Lesson in Belowskology!

Meet gurus that hang out on YouTube and complicated complex cosmopolitans. Meet John Lennon in heaven and Bonn Scott in his bedroom, meet the Sex Pistols, Malcolm McLaren and Vivian Westwood down at World’s End.

Belowsky’s comedic, mesmerising spoken word will have you laughing, thinking and wondering as he takes you on a journey around the world and back again through the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, like you’re trapped in a neon technicolour pinball machine.

From his famous lobby shows at the infamous Standard Hotel, West Hollywood, to his live talk show Authentic at the Notting Hill Arts Club and opening for The Charlatans at the Cuckoo Club in the West End of London for Death Disco TV, to most recently bringing his quick wit to Foxtel’s Quickies in my Kitchen with celebrity chef Anna Gare, this international hound dog will leave you wanting more.

Performance poets announced for Fremantle Poets 3

Eleven Western Australian performance poets have been chosen for the collection which will be published in Fremantle Poetry Month in July 2012. They are: Allan Boyd (aka the antipoet), Jeremy Balius, Liana Joy Christensen, Gabrielle Everall, Amber Fresh, Afeif Ismail, Janet Jackson, Sam Knee (aka Byron Bard), Dosh Luckwell, Kaitlyn Plyley and John Charles Ryan.

Richter said the poets selected gave a sense of the range of voices and styles in Western Australia.

“These poets give a sense of the diverse talent, variety and vigour of our performance poetry scene,” said Richter.

Guest editor and performance poet Scott-Patrick Mitchell said he believed Fremantle Poets 3was something West Australians would be intrigued by.

“The poets selected for this anthology represent what makes the Perth performance poetry scene so exciting and unique – this is the survey our city needed,” said Mitchell.

Fremantle Poets 3: Performance Poets will include a CD Rom produced with the assistance of Fremantle Poetry Month sponsor Fremantle Radio.

Dr Ted Walker, CEO of Fremantle Radio, said he was pleased and proud to be a sponsor of the volume.

Poets were selected by an editorial committee comprised of Georgia Richter and Wendy Jenkins of Fremantle Press and guest editor Scott-Patrick Mitchell. They were chosen for the survey on the basis of written manuscripts and a recorded performance piece.

David Barnes – Prayers Waiting for God

David Barnes’ first poetry collection is now available from Mulla Mulla Press.

After years of writing, editing and publishing his poetry for enthusiastic readers in Australia and overseas, Perth poet David Barnes has at last created a book.

Spanning a lifetime, crafted with care, spoken in David’s inimitable, gentle Australian voice, these are poems of the stark spirituality of nature, the meeting of eyes, hands and souls, the joy and bewilderment of birth, the tearing grief of premature loss and the horror of abuse.

This is David Barnes’ first and last book.

Creativity workshop

Dreams and Archetypes

Presented by Clinical Psychologist

Mr Tom Locke — Monday 9th May 7.30pm

Tom works with contemporary, evidence-based therapies of the conscious mind that include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT).

He combines these approaches with classical Jungian (Analytic) Therapy that recognises the presence of the unconscious aspects of the Human Psyche.

Tom will draw from his professional and personal experience to describe this interplay of the conscious and unconscious mind as found in archetypes as they occur in dreams.

He will examine some of the primal, recurrent characterisations that are carried across cultures in Myths, Fairytales and Religions and connect them to the world of everyday consciousness.

Clubs and Societies project

What is Clubs & Socs?

Clubs & Socs is one of The Red Room Company’s major projects for 2011, pairing contemporary poets with clubs and societies from across Australia. Astronomers, hackers, stamp collectors, crochet clubs, anyone can get involved in this project. Five poets from NSW and one from all other states and territories will partner with a broad range of clubs and societies representing Australia’s diverse cultural landscape.

What is involved as a poet?

Commissioned poets will become members of the club, attend meetings and events, learn to speak the language of its people for the duration of the project. This experience will then inform the creation of a new poetic work or series of works. For the purposes of this project The Red Room Co. defines poetry broadly, so the works may take the form of collaborative installations, visual or audio works, or performances. This poetic work will be featured on the Clubs & Socs website and other print material associated with the project. A poet and club will also be ‘featured’ each week during the project.

Key dates

  • May: Launch event for Clubs & Socs at the Sydney Writers’ Festival.
  • June-July: Poets placed in clubs and societies + poet and club profile featured online.
  • July-August: Poets complete ‘blog’ entry/ upload of visual/audio material collected from club experiences, working on poem(s) and attending club meetings.
  • August-October Poets submit finished poem to The Red Room Company for publication on website, printed material and presentation at a live event.
  • October-November: Official close of project though it is hoped poets and clubs will continue their relationships.

Fremantle Press seeks performance poets

Fremantle Press invites poets to submit a collection of their work for publication in Fremantle Poets 3: Performance Poets. Up to ten outstanding performance poets will be chosen for the survey on the basis of their manuscripts and a recorded performance piece. Fremantle Press poetry publisher Georgia Richter said she hoped the survey would garner the same enthusiastic responses she received for Fremantle Poets 1: New Poets.

“Performance poetry in Western Australia is vibrant and diverse and we can recognise this talent by publishing a title of this kind,” said Richter.

Poets will be selected by an editorial committee comprised of Georgia Richter and Wendy Jenkins of Fremantle Press and guest editor Scott-Patrick Mitchell.

Mitchell, who is currently undertaking a PhD in Performance Poetry at WAAPA, said the publications and events associated with July’s Fremantle Poetry Month were helping him attain new skills in poetry publishing.

“I was published in Fremantle Poets 1: New Poets, performed at the launch, ran a student poetry writing workshop and now I’ve been invited to edit the next edition of Fremantle Poets – it’s been an exciting process,” said Mitchell.

“I feel I can bring an understanding of how performance poetry is written, performed and the process of becoming a published poet to this new volume as a result of my performance experience and current studies,” he said.

Submissions for Fremantle Poets 3: Performance Poets close on 1 June 2011. Contributing poets will be announced at the Fremantle Poetry Month launch on 7 July 2011 at the Fremantle Arts Centre. Submission guidelines and more information about Fremantle Poetry Month are available on http://www.fremantlepress.com.au/resources/poetrycentre. The 2011 Fremantle Press poetry list includes The Argument by Tracy Ryan, The Moving World by Michael Heald and Fremantle Poets 2: Two Poets by Kevin Gillam and Andrew Lansdown.

GINKO INVITATION

The Mari Warabiny Haiku Group invites you to join us for a ginko (haiku walk)

Saturday 29th January 2011, 11 am

Wanneroo Botanical Gardens and Mini Golf

This venue has a picturesque series of walks, with a variety of flora and water features. There is an abundance of material for haiku and other forms and the walking is easy. It includes a very good restaurant and an outside shaded area with tables. Miniature golf is an option, although I surmise that the creation of haiku will be of top priority. You may like to bring your cameras.

Peter would love to see as many as possible at the walk.

For those without cars, there is a bus that travels from Joondalup station to the golf park, with next to no walking involved. For those who may need a lift from the station, Peter is willing and able to take three passengers (very small car).

Details of Transperth connection is:
Joondalup Stn Stand 3
Route : 468 Joondalup Stn
Total Walking Distance: 411 m

Please let us know if you can attend by email: haikumariwarabiny@gmail.com
Thank you Peter Rondel for organising this event

So what is a ginko?
A ginko is a haiku walk through a chosen location where poets write, discuss, revise, workshop, read, laugh, breathe and listen to haiku.—Myron Lysenko
You dont need to walk far, in fact you dont need to walk at all, if you are unable to.
This will be a supportive, encouraging event, so come along and have some fun.

Participants should submit one poem (written in some sort of traditional form) for consideration a fortnight before the workshop.
